Environment

by Cecile Cinco

We have heard complaints all over the world that our environment is going down the drain. We’re destroying it, that’s obvious. The government can only do much. The UN can only do much. How many are they? What are WE doing to contribute to the betterment of our environment?

In the Philippines, we have a lot of junk shops. The poorest of the poor go to landfills and scavenges through the smokey mountain of trash. Then they go to junk shops to sell what they got.

There was a time when we lived in a 2-storey house where my parents and siblings lived upstairs and my own family lived downstairs. When they moved to another place I rummaged through what they have left behind. I sorted them out according the sorting the junk shops do. I was able to earn more than 700 pesos which can buy about 10kgs of tilapia or milkfish (common fish we have) now.

Last week, with the little space we have and everything on top and around, I rummaged through the suitcase of stuff I have which was not opened till that time–last week. There were books, craft stuff and cords of sorts like vga cables, power cords and printer cables that haven’t been in use for several years. I’ve been keeping them for future use but it seems that no use will be for them now.

I stashed them away together with the bottles and plastics that will go to the junk shop in a little while. They will then recycle them.

What is your share in helping our global environment? Yes, it starts with our own selves.

Hello Cecile. I was unaware you are in the Philippines, my dad goes there to see the dentist as it is far less expensive than Guam even with the plane trip cost. But let me get back on topic. We do need to start with ourselves and see what we can do right now to do our share in lessening our out take in garbage and do more recycling or reusing. I have just recently started taking advantage of our recycling service since I have been buying more bottled water. I should be doing more and will do so.

Indeed, Karen! If everyone does the same then it will be easier and faster to achieve! :) So, where are you now? Here, or in the US/Guam?

    Hi C5

Change is something we need to start for ourselves. We can’t teach change by preaching it to others. Since we will end up like hypocrites to them. I’ve come across a wonderful poem about a man who like to change the world and latter on as his life was about to end, he then realized that change is something he should start himself. I just cant remember the tittle but I think you also know these.

To let my kids practice frugality, I let them set aside all those plastic containers for them to sell on the peddlers roaming here in the village. It’s shooting 2 birds with one stone, they have an income at the same time they are helping the environment. I also tell my neighbors about not burning plastic things when they will clean their surroundings, since it is not good for the ozone layer.
