It may not always work as people have different personalities but generally, girls, ladies, women, have something in common: we appreciate something given from the heart no matter how small they are. I said, most do. Not all, but fairly most.
So how can you go about this? Either you can make your own stuff if you have some creative sense or you can buy gifts for her that may not necessarily be expensive. The important thing is the thought and the effort you have done. 
Oh, since men/boys forget dates most of the time, I suggest you keep note of important dates you are expected to remember and put it in your wallet.
