The Fear Of Medical Malpractice

by Cecile Cinco

I rarely go to hospitals. I rarely even get checkups. The times I did, those times were very necessary or I was forced into it.

I remember when I was very young my mom brought me to have my mucus suctioned. A tube went into my nostril and passed through my throat to get the phlegm out. To me that was horrifying. It never happened again.

The next time I had a checkup for asthma back in the early 90s. I was x-rayed. I was told I had wheezing breathing and concluded that I had an early stage of asthma. I was told to go back but I never did. Up until now I have asthma but since I know what triggers it and I know how to pacify it, except when I almost died, I kept away from doctors.

I had my first baby and the first time I went to a registered midwife was when the baby was already on its ninth month. I had undergone ultrasound on its fifth month but that’s just about it. The gender was even hiding so the only thing I learned was the baby was healthy. Delivered normally and went home the next day.

I had a miscarriage after that but I simply flushed it away. The fetus was barely 2 months, though. So it was just like having my normal period with more clotty blood.

When my 2nd child was 4 months, I was rushed to the hospital for stomach pain. I had eaten 4 balut eggs that night. I had ultrasound but the doctor said it was just a case of constipation. When we went home we were billed P800. It was an inside joke that each balut was worth P200….too expensive.

A month later I was rushed again. It seemed I was in labor and the fetus was really kicking me. It was too painful I wanted anything to remove the pain. I had another ultrasound. The result showed I had 2 ovarian cysts. The size of my tummy was like it was my term already. So, it was the cysts. The doctor said it can get smaller and she can remove it for free at the same time I would deliver the baby. I was scheduled to go home the next day but that midnight brought me to the operating table. I had to wait some minutes, though, for a table to be freed but the pain was so much I was pleading for a pain killer. I was given novaine. Later I learned that I should have not been given such. It was an example of medical malpractice by the nurse.

On the table, I felt the needle through my back. All the while I was in contact with my Creator. I bid my doctor that may God bless her and her staff…then I drowsed off. When I awakened, I learned that my baby was saved. Earlier we made a choice, by the way. It turned out that the cyst was twisted and erupted that night but the miracle was it did not spread out so she was able to get everything out while the uterus was just kept aside…and brought back. I delivered my Myrrh Raquel normally through the same midwife who delivered my first.

My youngest was the only one born in the hospital because I was rejected by everyone else who do not have an emergency measure in case I got an asthma attack. Still, normal delivery.

Recently, with the influenza A-H1N1 scare, I just stayed home fevered. I quarantined myself. My own family did not get any fever after so we thought it was just amoebiasis. The toilet seemed to be my bedroom then. I’m ok now, though.

So you see, I’m not really fond of getting hospitalized. Apart from the cost, the medical malpractice that gets prevalent keeps me home as much as possible.

How about you, have you had any experience with any medical malpractice? What did you do? Although it would really be late when life is lost, did you know that you can ask the help of a medical malpractice attorney? Try to do a search in your area. If you’re from Rochester, NY, for example, try searching for Rochester medical malpractice attorney.
