The Concept Of Making A Speech

by Cecile Cinco

I’ve never been good at talking especially if its a speech. I can probably manage with conversational speaking but with speech? I can say my daughter can do well far above what I can do at the moment.

That doesn’t mean I don’t know the concept of making a speech. Actually, since my husband is part of the UCG-Manila Spokesman Club and my daughter a member of the Youth Speech Club, I’ve learned how to make a speech (in written form) somehow.

Here is what I learned:

A speech is formed by

  • introduction;
  • specific purpose statement (SPS);
  • specific purpose question (SPQ);
  • specific purpose benefit (SPB);
  • body; and
  • conclusion

The introduction must get the audience’s attention. The overall message of the speech must connect to your audience otherwise they just might want to sleep.

SPS states your purpose of giving the speech. It connects with the question (SPQ) that asks your audience in relation to your message and you give them the benefit (SPB) for your audience why they should listen to you.

Your body will give the examples and credentials for your statement. This is where you elaborate everything.

The conclusion will give the gist of your whole message so it will be remembered more easily and it connects to your introduction. Probably even students taking one the mba programs can learn from this short sharing.
