Degeneration Gap

by Cecile Cinco

I grew up under the influence of a disciplinarian pair of parents. At a young age we were taught what should and should not be done. Even before we started schooling we memorized the Ten Commandments. We know stories from the Bible from the Creation to what’s going to happen in Revelation.

Physically, most of us six siblings walked before age 1, weaned at 9 months, learned what ‘no’ means before reaching our first birthday. Most of us were breastfed but a combination of formula happens from time to time especially when travelling but all of us learned to use the tumbler or glass at 9 months.

Potty training started as early as 6 months! And my mom would always say “I’ve done it, so can you.” (If you think you’re having such a hard time, here are some potty training tips.)

As I got my own family and went through the normal process of parenthood, I know that my parents’ child rearing was better/stricter/more focussed. There are exceptional examples like training my eldest to use the mouse at 1 1/2 years young but I could not blame them.

As I look to others’ examples (I know it’s not good to compare) for statistics’ sake, I see more and more parents lax on discipline. That is primarily what makes children spoiled brats (imagine, there’s even a movie BRATZ!).

More whiners inside a grocery store when something the child want was not bought. More complainers when there is just one kind of viand. More pouting faces and cursings FROM THE CHILD towards the parents.

Is that not DEGENERATION gap? If we don’t do something about it now, it will haunt us later.
