The Philippines is known for its hospitality. Greater than that is its close family ties. Filipinos are closely knit even to the 3rd degree (cousins through upper generation cousins). It’s a cultural thing.
Grandparents are known to be the ones spoiling the grandkids (not my parents, though; they are disciplinarians to grandkids and I like it that way). Even when grandparents can no longer walk or talk or feed themselves, more often than not, they stay with family….sometimes because lack of money leaves the children no choice.
On the other hand, the rich Filipinos buy the services of a nursing home to bring it to theirs so the grandparent can be well taken care of and still be within reach. This is the best option, I think…IF you have the money.
For the Americans, it may also be a cultural thing but their grands are better off staying at nursing homes since most of them can afford it anyway. Having to maintain at least 2 jobs, it is not easy to leave someone aged and sick alone at home. In a nursing home, not only will he or she be cared for accordingly, he or she is within a community with the same age bracket. They can play together, sing together, tell stories, and create a brand new set of friends who understands each other better.
How about you, where do your grandparents stay? Why?
